What is Nano Banana?

Short answer

Nano Banana is Google’s Gemini image model, used for generative editing rather than filtering. You describe a change in ordinary language and it rewrites the image around that instruction while leaving the rest intact, accepting up to ten reference images so a subject, a style and a background can be blended in one pass. Nano Banana Pro is the higher-fidelity variant; Nano Banana 2 is the text-to-image sibling.

What makes it different from an image filter

A filter applies a transformation uniformly. A generative editor understands the scene and rewrites part of it — adding an object that casts the right shadow, removing one and reconstructing what was behind it, or placing a subject in a new environment with plausible lighting. That is why the instruction matters more than the settings: "replace the sky with a storm" gives the model something to reason about, while "stormy" gives it a mood and no target.

The three variants and when each applies

The base Nano Banana is fast and is the right default while you are exploring, because at that stage you are choosing a direction rather than finishing an asset. Nano Banana Pro follows long, multi-clause instructions far more reliably and holds fine detail through heavy edits, at a higher cost and a slower render — reserve it for the final pass. Nano Banana 2 is text-to-image rather than editing, covering 0.5K to 4K with a wide stylistic range.

Using it in a pipeline

Image editing is rarely the last step. A common chain is to generate or edit a frame with Nano Banana, animate it with a video model, and add a voice track — which on a workflow platform runs as one execution rather than three separate tool visits. Because reference images condition the edit, the same subject can be held recognisable across every frame produced this way.
