What is the difference between a natal chart and a horoscope?
A natal chart (or birth chart) is a fixed map of the entire sky at the exact moment and place you were born — it never changes and describes your individual makeup. A horoscope is a short, time-based forecast, usually written per Sun sign for a day, week, or month, describing current planetary movements. In other words, the natal chart is personal and permanent, while a horoscope is general and temporary. Serious astrology starts from your natal chart; daily Sun-sign horoscopes are the simplified, one-size-fits-twelve version.
The natal chart: your fixed map
Your natal chart is a snapshot of where every planet sat, from your exact birthplace, at your exact birth moment. It is unique to you and never changes for your whole life. It contains your big three, all your planet placements by sign and house, and the aspects between them — the raw material for understanding your temperament, relationships, and patterns. When astrologers talk about "reading your chart," this is what they mean, and it requires accurate birth date, time, and location.
The horoscope: a moving forecast
A horoscope describes what the sky is doing now and how it might relate to you. The daily horoscopes in apps and magazines are the mass-market version: they take only your Sun sign and write one paragraph for everyone who shares it, which is why they feel generic. More personalized "transit" readings compare today’s planetary positions against your natal chart, which is far more specific — but that still starts from the fixed natal chart underneath. A horoscope is the weather; the natal chart is your climate.
Which one to start with
If you are new, begin with your natal chart, because everything else builds on it. Generate an accurate chart, learn your big three and key placements, and you will get far more out of any forecast afterward — you will know whether a transit is hitting something important in your chart or not. Daily Sun-sign horoscopes are fine as light entertainment, but they cannot substitute for the personal detail a natal chart provides.
