How do you read your birth chart?
To read your birth chart, start with the "big three" — your Sun (core identity), Moon (emotional world), and Rising sign (how you meet the world) — then look at where the other planets fall by sign and house, and finally at the aspects (angles) between them. Read it in that order: luminaries first for the broad strokes, then each planet-in-sign for detail, then aspects for how those parts interact. A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at your exact birth moment, so an accurate time and place matter.
Start with the big three
Every chart has an anchor: the Sun, Moon, and Rising (Ascendant). The Sun is your core identity and what energizes you; the Moon is your emotional instincts and what makes you feel safe; the Rising is the mask you meet the world with and how others first read you. Reading these three together already tells you most of the story — someone with a Leo Sun, Scorpio Moon, and Virgo Rising is a very different person from a Leo Sun with a Pisces Moon. Add the planets by sign and house
Next, look at where the remaining planets sit. Each planet governs a function — Mercury your mind, Venus your love and values, Mars your drive — and the sign it occupies colors how that function expresses. The house it sits in (there are twelve) shows the life area where it plays out: relationships, career, home, and so on. "Venus in Taurus in the 7th house" reads as steady, sensual values focused on committed partnership. This is where a chart becomes specific to you rather than generic sun-sign horoscope material.
Finish with the aspects
Aspects are the angles planets make to each other, and they describe how the parts of you interact — harmoniously or with tension. A Sun-Saturn aspect might show discipline or self-doubt; a Venus-Mars aspect shapes how desire and affection combine. You do not need to memorize everything at once. Generate an accurate chart, learn your big three, then explore one placement at a time. An exact birth time and location are what make the houses and Rising reliable, so use a real calculator rather than guessing.
